On Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, OneAmerica interviewed a number of people affected by the ICE raid. The interviewees included two women – whose identities we are protecting – who were fearful for their safety and of their families. These women did not want to be photographed or videotaped.
‘Elena’
Elena (not her real name) is a young mother who worked at the Yamato Engine Specialists plant until the raid on Tuesday, Feb. 24. She and her family fled the violence of the border region of Mexico several years ago to work in the United States. She recounts her experience during the raid in this interview. (17 min.)
‘Yolanda’
Yolanda (not her real name) is a mother whose husband was arrested and detained in the ICE raids. Her husband, now held in the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, was a longtime employee of Yamato. Through his work at the plant, he was able to provide for his immediate family, his parents and his sister. She tells her story here. (13 min.)
Interviews conducted by OneAmerica’s Naomi Ishisaka with videography by Inye Wokoma of Ijo Arts; translation provided by Rosalinda Guillen of Community to Community.
