Owuor Arunga, Jazz
Owuor Arunga is a native of Kisumu Kenya. His resume includes international record releases with the Planet Arts recording label and international tours of US, Canada, Europe, and South Africa. As a graduate of the New School University, he was awarded the opportunity to play with the beacons of jazz. Including performing as
sideman with Charlie Persip, Candido Camero, Billy Bang, The Cadillacs , Robert Glasper, Louis Reyes Rivera, Owuor apprenticed with the likes of jazz’s elite, which include masters Olu Dara, Jimmy Owens, & Chico Freeman, Owuor went on to receive his production credits from Native instruments program developer Chris List.
In acknowledgment of his talent and his ability to absorb the knowledge of his elders, he was branded with the title “Young Lion”. He has since founded a local jazz group composed of equally talented artists with the same moniker.
You can check out his music here and here.
Seattle Fandango Project, Latin Music & Dance
The Seattle Fandango Project is dedicated to building relationships and social activism through participatory
music. Workshops and events are sustained by fandango musicians from Mexico and California and community members of the Seattle area.
The Fandango traditions of Veracruz, Mexico, use music, singing, and dancing to generate a spirit of convivencia—of living and being in community. For a decade, musicians in Veracruz and in California have built a movement of convivencia through Fandango Sin Fronteras (Fandango Without Borders). The Seattle Fandango Project brings this movement to Seattle with local workshops, concerts, and public discussions with guest artists, as well as community members, organizers, and educators. Check out their Facebook and website.
dakóta, rapper/cultural carrier
dakota is a multi-faceted artist and cultural carrier who aims to put the human back on the stage and take the ignorant consumerism, the sexism, and the homophobia out of the music.
dakota seriously started developing rap skills in 2007 in cipher circles with Youth Speaks Seattle. The Seattle youth poet
ry community challenged dakota to grow into both a writer and a youth organizer. In addition to rap, dakota has also studied hip hop at the Katalyst Project, a youth-centered hip program dedicated to engaging youth to find self-sustainability through art. Through building partnerships with YouthSpeaks, the Hidmo, The Northwest Network and AFSC, dakota has organized all-ages hip hop shows in the Central District, which featured youth and local hip hop performers and organizers.
dakota has had the incredible opportunity to rock shows with many other talented performers in the local music scene and is now an active member of the Madison Hip Hop Movement. You can check out his website here, and listen to a sample of his music here
Solomon Georgio, Comedy
Solomon Georgio burst into the Seattle comedy scene with his own brand of absurd, indignant irreverence. A
finalist in the 2010 San Francisco International Comedy Competition and a semi-finalist in the 2009 Seattle International Comedy Competition; Solomon Georgio has more than proven his natural comedic talent.
One of seven children born to two Ethiopian immigrants, Solomon Georgio intertwines the stories of his insane childhood with insightful social commentary and delusions of grandeur. As an openly gay comic in the Pacific Northwest, Solomon Georgio still manages to entertain and relate his humor to audiences from all walks of life.
Carina A. del Rosario, Photography
Carina A. del Rosario immigrated with her family from the Philippines when she was six years old. She earned her B.A. in Com
munication from Santa Clara University in 1991 where, to complement her journalism studies, she taught herself photography. Years later, she studied with National Geographic Traveler Photographer Raul Touzon and Eddie Soloway, as well as Magnum Photographer Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb. She continues to develop her skills with the help of fellow artists in Seattle. In addition to pursuing her own creative projects, she teaches photography, digital storytelling and media justice to youth. She freelances with non-profit and social justice organizations to provide them with a range of media services, including photography, writing, editing, training and consultation. She also co-founded International District Engaged in Arts (IDEA) Odyssey, a visual arts collective and gallery in Seattle.
Thig Nat, Photography
Gathigi is a rapper and singer in the standout Seattle trio The Physics who are dropping their highly-anticipated fourth release, Love Is A Business, this summer.
The lifelong musician has also emerged as a photographer known for his candid style. He shoots and blogs easily-missed details and portraits of people and places dear to him. Gathigi enjoys his Leica M7 camera, surfin the net at coffee shops and trying on five different outfits before he leaves the house. See his work on his several blogs: most notably The Physics of Art, an ode music and fashion, but also here, and here.
